Minimum Qualifications - Must be a US citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be currently attending a New York State college, university or graduate program, or be a resident of NewYork State attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State
- Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two-or four-year college or university (completion of one year's worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students)
- Or currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
- Must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent to a C.
Preferred qualifications:
- Junior year college student or higher
- Major in Information Technology/Computer Science, Informatics, Engineering, or Information Management
Preferred skills:
- Familiarity with Exel, specifically with basic data analysis such as spotting patterns, trends, outliers and generating pivots and charts
- Scripting programming skills (Python preferred)
- Solid written and verbal comprehension and communication skills
- Ability to work productively in both independent and team settings
Duties Description Working under the direction of an Information Technology Specialist 3, the incumbent will work closely with partner agencies to support the New York Open Data platform (Open Data NY) established in March 2013 by Governor's Executive Order 95.
Open Data NY (https://data.ny.gov) has been an internationally recognized, award-winning platform for making NYS government data available to the public to increase transparency, promote research, economic opportunity, innovation, engagement, and awareness of government functions. Open Data NY has been second to none among programs of its kind in its attention to quality and discoverability for data assets published to the platform.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
-- Review data and associated documentation submitted by partner agencies for quality, correctness, and value as a public data asset.
-- Provide clear written or verbal feedback and suggestions to partner agencies for improving dataset submissions.
--Work with partner agencies to guide assigned datasets through the publishing process.
--Load dataset submissions onto the Open Data NY platform.
--Evaluate data for potentially valuable companion visualizations such as aggregations, charts, and maps.
--Take part in team discussions regarding dataset submissions.
-- Respond to partner agency questions about the Open Data NY program and our publishing procedures.
-- Contribute to the development of new or updated guidance.
-- Ensure that published datasets are being kept up-to-date according to their specified posting frequency, and follow up with owning agency as necessary.
-- Scripting programming:
- Rewrite existing Microsoft PowerShell scripts using Python;
- Rewrite and extend existing Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros using Python;
- Perform data analysis using Python
Additional Comments Fingerprinting will be required of hired candidates. Selected candidates who are new or returning to NYS service may be required to pay for fingerprinting fees.
