Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree and three years of professional research experience in aquatic biology; or a Master's Degree in aquatic biology and two years of professional research experience in that field; or a Doctoral degree in aquatic biology. Strong written and oral communication, organization, project management, and research skills are required.
Area of Specialty is Aquatic Biology; and preference will be given to candidates who possess academic credentials and experience in the following fields: AIS research, identification, prevention, and management.
Duties Description Under the technical and administrative supervision of the Bureau of Invasive Species & Ecosystem Health, Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator (Research Scientist 2) the successful candidate will be responsible for the following activities:
Assess Integrated Pest Management for Widespread Species (15%)
• Work closely with federal, state, and non-government organizations to develop protocols and methods for control and management of aquatic invasive species such as hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillate) and Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis)
Conduct AIS Research (40%)
• Assist with creating experimental design to determine basic biology of particular AIS and to assess impacts of treatment and assessment of risk/infestation.
• Assist with developing monitoring protocols and metrics to assess outcomes of treatment and restoration projects.
• Assist with genotyping of and eDNA work on high priority aquatic invasive species such as hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata), round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), and northern snakehead (Channa argus) independently and in collaboration with existing laboratories conducting related work.
• Conduct statistical analyses of research and integrated pest management outcomes as needed
• Assist in development of models for research outcomes and integrated pest management results
Identify AIS (15%)
• Assist with identification of specimens and infestations reported to isinfo@dec.ny.gov and iMapInvasives.org.
Assist with Coordination and Evaluation of AIS Research and Projects Funded by the Department (15%)
• Assist with evaluation of invasive species project grant proposals and quarterly report review of funded projects
• Be part of team that works with state and federal agencies, NY Invasive Species Research Council, and researchers to identify gaps in knowledge and additional research needs necessary to evaluate and develop effective spread prevention and early detection methods and to determine basic biology. Identify potential Primary Investigators.
Act as a Regional liaison (15%)
• Track aquatic invasive plant and animal pesticide treatment projects in Departmental Regions
• Provide input on aquatic plant management plans and projects as per request by stakeholders
• Offer consultation about control and management to stakeholders and regions
• Assist with evaluation and coordination of watercraft inspection steward programs on a seasonal basis
Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work it remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Must successfully complete (or have completed) the 40-hour OSHA 1910.120 training course and all other required training. Must complete an annual Health and Safety Program including medical monitoring, fit testing, and 40 (or 8) hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
