Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Must be a member of the New York State Bar Association. An understanding of New York Workers' Compensation law related to calculating premium a plus.

Duties Description New York State Insurance Fund:

The New York State Insurance Fund (“NYSIF” or the “Fund”) is a self supporting state fund that provides workers’ compensation and disability benefits insurance in New York. With written premium of over $2 billion, NYSIF is the largest workers’ compensation insurance carrier in New York, and the sixth largest carrier in the country.

Illustrative Duties:

Oversee the legal and administrative aspects of the Legal Collections Department, which is charged with the collection of overdue premium owed by former policyholder/employers statewide. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Supervise the legal and administrative collections staff within NYC and the district offices across the state and report to senior management within the Legal Department

Coordinate the prosecution of collection litigation matters assigned to 8 district offices throughout New York State

Interact with outside counsel including the Office of the Attorney General on premium collection litigation

Provide counsel to operational departments on legal issues related to the charging and collection of workers compensation insurance premiums, including defaults, write-offs, underreporting of premium, and misclassification of work force

Work with the agency Special Investigations Unit on fraud investigations

Retain and monitor outside counsel to aid in the collection process

Coordinate the legal collection operations with the Accounts Receivable Division of the Finance Department

Report to executive level management on high profile cases
