Minimum Qualifications Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1:
Possession of a valid NYS Commercial Driver License Class B Permit with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2:
One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1; OR
Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and six months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles and twelve months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
OR:
A valid Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction and eighteen months of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.
Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 3:
One year as a Thruway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2; OR
Possession of a Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
AND:
Twelve months of experience in operating construction equipment and vehicles.
AND:
Eighteen months of experience in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
Journey-Level Thruway Maintenance Worker:
Satisfactory completion of a three-year Thruway Maintenance Worker Traineeship; OR
Possession of a New York State Commercial Driver License Class B with tank endorsement and no air brake restriction.
AND:
One year of experience operating construction equipment and vehicles.
AND EITHER:
Two years of experience in carpentry, masonry, ironwork, welding, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
OR:
Training received through completion of a two-year technical school course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair.
OR:
Completion of a high school technical course in carpentry, masonry, welding, ironwork, or other trade related to bridge construction or repair and 12 months of experience in bridge construction or repair.
Duties Description Thruway Maintenance Workers, in general, working alone or as part of a team, perform semiskilled duties required to maintain, improve, repair, and reconstruct the infrastructure of the Thruway. The infrastructure includes, but is not restricted to: pavements, shoulders, medians, rights-of-way, ramps, interchanges, bridges, culverts, water control and other structures, appurtenances and retaining walls. In addition, incumbents perform snow and ice control activities as required. Incumbents operate and perform minor repair and maintenance on a variety of self-propelled and other equipment in the course of their duties.
This position is also responsible for tasks including but not limited to emergency pothole repairs, tree and brush removal, milling/pavement repair, guide rail repair, mowing, right of way maintenance, property damage repair, jacking and lubing of bridge bearings, washing of bridge decks, joints, and steel, miscellaneous concrete repairs.

13 Paid Holidays, 4 of which are floating holidays, which are credited in July each year for use from July 1st through June 30th.
Vacation, Sick and Personal Accruals.
Sick Leave is credited at the rate of one-half day each biweekly pay period up to a total of 165 days.
Sick Leave Incentive Plan – Employees who have not accumulated 165 sick days and have not used sick leave during the periods of January 1st to June 30th or July 1st to December 31st, each year, may receive two days of pay for each six-month period. Employees who have a sick leave balance of 165 days, and continuously maintain that balance for each six-month period, may receive four days of pay for each six-month period.
Employees with 20+ years of continuous Authority/State service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.
Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.
New York's 529 College Savings Program, which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.
Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Service Award Payments - Upon completion of 10 years of Authority service, eligible employees will receive a 10-year Service Award Payment. Payments are then awarded every five years as noted in the contract until 30 years of Authority service is reached. Service Awards have a positive impact on retirement.
Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.
Some positions will be eligible for downstate and/or geographical pay depending on location and title.
