Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State, board-eligible or board certification in a medical specialty, and one year of experience in a clinical, hospital, or patient care setting.

Preferred Qualifications: Eight years of post-licensure experience practicing medicine at least one of which is an administrative or supervisory capacity. Demonstrated clinical and/or administrative leadership in health care delivery, including policy-making and/or quality assurance/quality improvement experience. A strong understanding of the medical misconduct process as well as excellent communication skills, strong decision-making capability and effective collaborative skills are valued.

Duties Description Under the general supervision of the Director of the Office of Professional Medical Conduct (OPMC), the incumbent of this position serves as the OPMC Medical Director. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provide leadership and guidance on clinical issues that arise within OPMC and its investigation and prosecution of professional misconduct matters;
• Provide advice and guidance to Bureau of Professional Medical Conduct prosecutors as required;
• Administer a statewide Quality Assurance program, including updating policies and procedures and coordinating the development and delivery of necessary training;
• Participate in the professional medical conduct process, including reviewing reports submitted to an Investigation Committee (IC) of the Board, and participating in IC and Pre-IC meetings;
• Assist with the clinical orientation and Quality Assurance evaluations of OPMC Medical Reviewers;
• Collaborate with the Physician Monitoring Program Medical Director representing the program’s interest in working with the Committee for Physician’s Health, and facilitating communications between the two entities;
• Participate in the evaluation of the information submitted by physicians appealing the posting of medical malpractice settlements to their New York State Physician Profiles;
• Represent the Department of Health and OPMC at the local and federal level in meetings with the medical community, health care providers, and others as necessary;
• Participate in the Health Commissioner’s Grand Rounds program; and
• Perform other tasks as requested by the Director of OPMC.

Additional Comments This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
