Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service to a Grade 27 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 and/or Section 52.6 of the NYS Civil Service Law.

Candidates must have a New York State Professional Engineer’s license and current registration.

Duties Description The incumbent provides professional management and engineering expertise for the planning, maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of highways and related facilities within the Thruway Division. Serves as the immediate assistant to the Division Maintenance Engineer and acts in his or her absence.

This position manages the activities of all highway maintenance supervisors regarding work schedules, deadlines, personnel, equipment needs and coordinates these activities with other maintenance program managers under the guidance and direction of the Division Maintenance Engineer. Oversees and coordinates the Thruway Maintenance Worker Training Programs as well as other training programs.

The incumbent also responds to emergencies, arranges for necessary resources, i.e. personnel, equipment and materials to return the Thruway to service.

Directs and coordinates snow and ice control within the division and serves as Division Duty Officer on a regular schedule.

Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.
New York's 529 College Savings Program which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.
Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Employees with 20+ years of State/Authority service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.
Longevity Pay: Employees with five years of satisfactory service at or above the maximum salary of their grade will be eligible to have salary advanced to the First Longevity, 10 years of satisfactory service will advance to the Second Longevity, and 15 years of satisfactory service will advance to the Third Longevity. Longevity pay has a positive impact on retirement.
Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.
