Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of
technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license (from their issuing state) appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and as part of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.

Duties Description Duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of buildings, grounds and facility equipment (inspection of fuel tank, fire extinguishers, oil separators, etc.)
• Perform water testing as required at select facilities and keep system maintained to proper chlorine levels
• Perform cleanup and custodial duties as assigned
• Make repairs, maintain and service mechanical equipment
• Perform routine replacement and repair of plumbing and potable water systems and steam fitting equipment and installation of new equipment according to layouts provided by cutting, fitting and threading pipe, removing existing pipes and fixtures. Must understand oil fired and propane fired heating systems.
• Perform semi-skilled carpentry activities, including repairing/replacing doors, windows, railings, locks and door hardware. Construction of miscellaneous small buildings/roof structure to protect equipment and materials, from wood and metal materials. This also includes concrete form work, concrete flat work, foundation slab/sidewalk work, and other miscellaneous concrete repairs
• Operate and maintain heating and hot water equipment by replacing parts such as filters, pumps and cleaning equipment
• Perform semi-skilled masonry repairs to drainage inlets and buildings
• Perform routine tasks of the electrical trade, including repairing electrical equipment such as overhead door motors, switches, outlets and lights
• Perform moderate to heavy manual labor; climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms. It will be expected that Maintenance Assistants will obtain training and certification in Aerial Lift Devices.
• Apply a working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used withing the Department as indicated for the position, apply a working knowledge of safety standards and procedures and applicable codes and regulations
• Cuts, welds, and brazes a variety of metal materials
• Obtain written/faxed/emailed quotes for various equipment, materials and vendor work.
• Operate and maintain machine tools, cutting saws and equipment such as chain saws, weed trimmers and lawn mowers
• General painting and hanging of fixtures such as hooks, shelves, monitors, etc.
• Job may also include overseeing GreenThumb staff at a Rest Area, including tasking them with job assignments and sending in their time summary to their supervisors
• Selected candidate will have the option of participating in the Residency’s Snow & Ice program. This would require a CDL B minimum considered to be in good standing with no air-brake restriction as well as certification through the NYSDOT on Heavy Dump, Loader and One-Person-Plowing.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Additional Comments The starting salary for this position is $50,399. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $41,399 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
