Job Specifics

Duties Description • Help develop and implement OIG’s communications and public affairs strategy, with major emphasis on MTA employee outreach.
• Conceptualize and create engaging videos and other timely and evergreen content for social media channels to publicize auditing and investigative reports, highlight public appearances by the Inspector General and other staff members, profile OIG employees, and raise awareness of the office.
• Take the lead creative, writing, and project managing role in the production of OIG’s annual report, including coordination with an external graphic designer and internal departments.
• Make regular outreach visits to MTA facilities to discuss the functions of our office with workers and management, including but not limited to NYC Transit bus depots, subway yards, stations, and maintenance areas; Long Island Rail Road yards and stations; Metro-North Railroad yards and stations; and Bridge & Tunnel facilities.
• Help draft press releases for audits, investigations, and other OIG news. Field media inquiries and craft appropriate responses. Help prepare the Inspector General for media interviews.
• Help review draft reports for audits and investigations.
• Assist as needed with office-wide recruitment, including the preparation of online material and identifying and attending job fairs.
• Help manage and inform the development, production, and regular upgrades of OIG’s website.
• Play a central role in planning and managing the office’s internal and external events.
• Take on other OIG responsibilities as needed, within and outside the communications office.

Minimum Qualifications Qualifications/Relevant Experience
• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution, preferably in communications, journalism, public affairs, public relations, English, marketing, or a related field.
• A minimum of five years working in communications, public affairs, journalism or marketing departments. An interest in transportation trends, issues, and policy is a plus.
• Demonstrated, exceptional multi-media skills, including short-form video production for a variety of social media channels. Experience running social media channels and creating professional content designed to maximize engagement and build out a following is a plus.
• Demonstrated analytical skills, critical thinking skills, impartial judgment, and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision-making.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including comfort with public speaking and engaging in outreach conversations with MTA employees at their places of work.
• Superior proficiency in all MS Office 365 modules (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, SharePoint, OneDrive).
• Ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities while maintaining careful attention to detail.
• Travel within the MTA’s geographic jurisdiction may be required.
• Working outside of regular business hours, including weeknights, weekends and holidays may occasionally be required.
• Pursuant to authorization by the MTA Inspector General this position is eligible for teleworking

Additional Comments Overview of the Position:

OIG is seeking a Communications and Public Affairs Manager to play an instrumental role in the office’s internal and external communications, MTA employee outreach, media relations, and event planning. The successful candidate, who will report to the Deputy Inspector General for Communications and Public Affairs, will be
required to maintain confidentiality on sensitive matters, including ongoing investigations and employment matters.
