Job Specifics

Duties Description Duties are expected to include, but are not limited to, monitoring radios, multiple emergency and non-emergency phone lines, alarms, cameras, officer activity, and service requests. Responsibilities also include serving as an information source and a first point of contact for the department, as such, it is imperative to be able to communicate effectively with the campus community and general public. In this position, the successful candidate must understand, analyze, synthesize and apply the elements of training, policies and procedures, to the wide variety of situations encountered in the dispatch center. They must be able to identify and use available resources to enhance the delivery of police services. Minimum Qualifications Promotion:
One year of permanent service as a Security Services Assistant 1, Security Services Assistant 2, or Security Officer.

Open Competitive:
One year of full-time experience as a police or peace officer; or
one year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement; or
one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military, where you served as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel; or
thirty college credit hours from an accredited institution of higher education.
A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with faculty, staff and administrators.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

Additional Comments This part-time, temporary position serves as the principal communication and documentation point for emergency and non-emergency response to campus incidents for the University Police Department (UPD). UPD provides law enforcement services to protect the safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to the University. We are part of the Enrollment and Student Success division which supports a student’s entire collegiate experience from the point of admission through to graduation. We partner with students, faculty and staff to provide a network of opportunities and services that lead to student success. Collectively, the division of Enrollment and Student Success positively influences the health, safety and well-being of the student body.

Shifts could be any time on any day, as needed. Duration of appointment will vary, dependent upon the circumstances.

Important Notes for those appointed under NY HELPS:
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
