Duties Description LOCATION/UNIT: University Police

TITLE/SALARY GRADE: University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1, SG-10

DURATION: Permanent

SALARY: $48,0148 annual (NOTE: current salary or reconstructed salary for state employees in accordance with NYS Audit and Control.)

POSITION DESCRIPTION: University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1, SG-10, will provide communication services within the University Police Department at the campuses of the State University of New York. Their primary responsibility is to function as a desk officer, dispatcher, and 911 operator. In this capacity they may be required to operate radio receiver and broadcast equipment, telephone equipment, terminal equipment, personal computers, closed circuit television systems, and electronic security systems. Answer telephone, radio, and computer communications lines, dispatch mobile and foot patrols, maintain appropriate records, and operate data terminals. Answer questions for students, staff and visitors. They will maintain a variety of data bases and prepare and file a variety of reports and logs.


Minimum Qualifications Requirements:

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).

For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NY HELPS):

One year of full time experience as a Police or Peace Officer; Or one year of full time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement; Or one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military, where you served as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel.

Substitution: 30 semester college credit hours from an accredited school

Must successfully complete a background check.

COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):

Candidates must have a reachable score on the University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 List OR

Be a current NYS employee and have a current permanent appointment with 1 year of service as a University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1, or in a title eligible to transfer to University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 OR

Be a former NYS employee eligible for reinstatement to the title of University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1

May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.

Must successfully complete a background check.
