Job Specifics
Duties Description The Research Scientist 1 on the Justice Lab team will assist a Research Scientist 2 with social science research and analysis related to the investigation of system, social, and behavioral issues within the field of criminal justice and/or among justice-involved populations. Research topics may include youth behavior, family court decision-making, law enforcement activity, adult criminal behavior, court case processing, sentencing, the impact of programming and treatment on behavior, reoffending and desistence from crime, and criminogenic factors. The incumbent will assist with research design, data analysis and the preparation of reports, including tables and charts. The incumbent will also support the management of criminal justice policy research conducted by external research partners and respond to ad hoc requests.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Assist with planning, designing, and executing criminal justice research and analytic projects, including developing research questions, formulating hypotheses, identifying an appropriate research design and methodology, and interpreting findings
• Assist with analyzing complex criminal justice data and prepare formal statistical reports for public dissemination
• Assist with preparing formal reports and presentations, which may include a description of the purpose of analyses, data and methodology used, and key findings
Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional research experience in the field of Criminal Justice. A master’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice or a related field may substitute for an additional year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include experience conducting criminal justice research; proficiency in Stata; experience with database management, coding, and querying in SQL; and experience in summarizing findings in narrative form. The preferred candidate will have a master’s degree or higher in criminal justice or a related field.
