Job Specifics
Duties Description Canals’ Asset Management & Inspection Bureau, one of the operational bureaus within the Engineering Services Division, is tasked with administering an inspection and audit program, using qualitative and quantitative data, in addition to performing onsite inspections and making direct observations frequently utilizing informational data gathered using drone technology, in order to determine the structural integrity and the safety of infrastructure assets.
Under the supervision of the Associate Capital Program Analyst, as well as the Director of Asset Management, the Student Assistant will be assigned to:
Data Management
• Organize, clean and maintain data for improved accuracy and integrity in our reporting.
Report Development
• Assist with the developing and publishing PowerBI (PBI) reports organization-wide.
• Update existing PBI report to a standard pre-approved theme & template.
Data Analysis
• Analyze datasets to identify trends, patterns, and correlations.
• Conduct AI (supervised) training and communicate feedback to Data Scientist Team.
Report Optimization
• Optimize PBI reports using best practices in Power Query, data modeling, and DAX.
• Debug and update assigned reports to enhance user experience.
Continuous Improvement
• Assist in continuous improvement, refining, and modernizing existing PBI reports and semantic models.
Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: candidates must be currently enrolled as part-time or full-time undergraduate or graduate college students at an education institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting
agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education.
***Please note that the preferred candidate will be actively working on a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree within the major fields of Data Analytics/Science, Business Analytics, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Informatics, or Statistics.***
Additional Comments The New York State Canal Corporation (Canals), a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority, is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the 524-mile waterway for boating, recreation, tourism and agriculture. The Canal system is made up of the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals, linking the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain. The 200-year-old NYS Canal System plays important roles in New York’s economic development, tourism industry and environmental stewardship.
SALARY: $16/hr. for Freshmen and Sophomores; $20/hr. for Juniors and Seniors; and $23/hr. for Grad Students.
We envision that the candidate would be able to work roughly 15 to 20 hours per week, depending upon their collegiate coursework and schedule. Hours per week, as well as assigned work hours, will be discussed at the interview.
