Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking candidates for an Information Technology Specialist 4 (Data Communications) position within the Networking team. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the installation, configuration, and administration of network devices and infrastructure. Managing and working with team members to ensure the network (and technologies associated) continue to thrive and strengthen. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Support NYSED’s network infrastructure of routers, switches, firewalls, LAN wiring, fiber optic cabling, network appliances, etc., and ensure network components are functioning optimally;
• Assist with the design, implementation, and administration of network equipment;
• Assist with capacity planning and monitoring of network data as we expand out;
• Oversee and assist staff with DDI, NAC, firewalls, and other network technologies (as procured);
• Analyze network and VoIP connectivity and bandwidth issues and perform appropriate remedial action;
• Develop and maintain system documentation for the agency network, including the creation of LAN and WAN diagrams as needed;
• Interact with other technical units to troubleshoot various hardware, software, and networking issues;
• Assist and communicate with ITS staff, management, and external vendors;
• Supervise subordinate staff with assignments, billing, and chargeback activities; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as an Information Technology Specialist 4 (Data Communications).

Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for this title, you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter.

Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in any of the following titles: Information Technology Specialist 4, Information Technology Specialist (Database), Information Technology Specialist (Operations), and Information Technology Specialist (Programming).

Section 52.6 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title allocated SALARY GRADE 23 or higher eligible to transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This will be a contingent-permanent, competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position allows for the opportunity to telecommute up to 50% each bi-weekly pay period and is granted at the discretion of the supervisor and the appointing office. This position requires occasional off-shift night and weekend work.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $121,413 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
