Job Specifics

Duties Description Senior Laboratory Animal Caretakers maintain animal laboratory, cleans and washes facilities, cages, and other equipment, and performs other housekeeping duties as scheduled and directed to ensure that facilities are clean and adequately supplied. Senior Laboratory Animal Caretakers observe animals to detect symptoms of disease and changes in condition. They encounter animals carrying a variety of communicable diseases including zoonosis. In handling, treating, feeding and all other contacts with such animals, incumbents use techniques designed to minimize the hazards of their own infection, as well as the contamination of uninfected stock or experimental animals.

Minimum Qualifications NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NY HELPS):

One year of full-time service as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories; or two years of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting

OR

Certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science and one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting.

COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):

Must be on the Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker Exam list and/or be in a permanent position with lateral or promotional eligibility to the title of Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker
