Job Specifics
Duties Description This position involves living and working on the NYSDEC Research Vessel Seth Green for extended periods of time (up to 10 days) including some weekends and overtime. They will be assisting in five approximately week-long surveys of fish communities using various gears including trawl and gill nets. The technician is responsible for learning standard operating procedures; retrieving and setting fishing or other sampling gear; processing catches including identifying, weighing and measuring fish; recording data quickly and accurately; and collecting and labeling biological samples. Other duties include assisting captain with general maintenance of research vessel, repairing fishing gear or other equipment; pressing fish scales, extracting and reading coded wire tags, extracting otoliths, and entering data. Other field and lab work may also be required as needed. Job includes travel per diem and may include overtime Must be able negotiate difficult terrain including ladders and work in adverse weather conditions including rough seas. Housing will not be provided when not on the boat.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. Previous experience with fish identification, working on boats with fisheries sampling gear, equipment maintenance, and data entry will be preferred.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.

Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 60 pounds.
Certification to operate motorized boats or personal water crafts will be required within 2 weeks after time of appointment.
