Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the supervision of a Sergeant, Park Police, SG-17, the incumbent of the Trades Generalist position will perform journey-level work in one trade and skilled and semiskilled level work in a combination of other trades in the maintenance and repair of the State Park Police Academy, its facilities and physical plant.

*Design and execute maintenance and repair plans and prioritize projects to meet the immediate needs of the Academy.

*Maintain adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish maintenance and repairs tasks.

*Make necessary purchases to accomplish tasks following agency purchasing guidelines.

*Operate and complete daily maintenance procedures for tractors, trucks, backhoe, skid steer and other equipment.

*Operate Academy vehicles in order to tow a 10,000 lbs trailer.

*Use and maintain small equipment such as generators, power wash, miter saw, table saw and hand tools.

*Repair and maintain facilities and equipment, including stone, concrete block and wooden buildings and mechanical installations.

*Install new piping, maintain and repair the water and sewer systems.

*Fell and remove trees and operate and maintain chain saws.

*Assist with maintenance of roads, paths and trails.

*Assist with details to support storm clean up or other emergency responses.

*Perform other maintenance and repair duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

**If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.

• Must possess a Class A, B, or C commercial driver’s license and be subject to the provisions of the OTETA Act (1991), see below. ***

• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices that must be utilized.

• Must have the ability to read blueprints and project plans as well as supply rough sketches for work to be performed.

• Must have a working knowledge of modern code compliance.

***Under the provisions of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The candidate is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug, and alcohol testing.
