Job Specifics

Duties Description The Division of Human Rights is seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead our Internal Audit Unit. This is a critical leadership role responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive audit plan that assesses the effectiveness of our internal controls, risk management processes, and governance. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker with a strong understanding of financial, operational, and compliance risks; possess the ability to drive positive change and foster a culture of accountability throughout the organization; and have a passion for upholding the tenets of the New York State Human Rights Law.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop, implement, and manage the annual internal audit plan, aligning it with the company's strategic objectives and risk profile.
• Lead and mentor a team of internal auditors, providing guidance, training, and performance management to ensure audit findings are relevant and reliable.
• Oversee the execution of financial, operational, compliance, and IT audits, ensuring they are conducted in accordance with professional standards (e.g., IIA Standards).
• Assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, identifying control weaknesses and recommending practical, cost-effective solutions.
• Evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of business operations and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Review compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
• Communicate audit findings and recommendations clearly and concisely to executives and senior managers.
• Develop and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
• Stay abreast of emerging risks, industry trends, and best practices in internal auditing.
• Contribute to the development and enhancement of the company's enterprise risk management (ERM) framework.

Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and five years of experience conducting or managing audits, examinations, or program reviews, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field.
• A minimum of five (5) years of relevant accounting, auditing and/or internal controls experience that demonstrates an increasing level of complexity and responsibility.
• Experience leading Internal Audits in New York State government.
• Strong understanding of the Standards for Internal Control in NYS Government, the Internal Controls Act, and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
• Excellent presentation skills and verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex issues simply and contextually.
• Ability to build and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with staff at all levels of an organization.
• Organized and proactive with the ability to self-manage competing priorities and tight deadlines.
• Certification as a CPA, CIA, CRMA, CISA, CRISC, CISM, or CFE.
• Experience using Teammate+, data analytics and data visualization platforms.
• Proven experience in risk assessment, audit planning, and execution.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the organization.
• Demonstrated leadership and team-building capabilities.
