Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of the Historic Site Manager A, SG-23 and Park Supervisor 1, SG-11, or their designee, the incumbent will be involved in all aspects of historic site maintenance including, but not limited to, the following:
• Conduct inspections and maintenance in park buildings and throughout the grounds.
• Clean facilities and grounds; load and unload vehicles.
• Operate and perform basic maintenance of equipment including self-propelled tools, power-driven tools, and vehicles.
• Perform upkeep and repair of park roads and paths, landscaping, gardening and mowing.
• Perform proper tree care using a chainsaw including pruning and removal of trees.
• Perform semi-skilled tasks such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and painting; assist the site manager and regional restoration staff in performing restoration work on historic structures.
• Supervise and train seasonal staff; assist with reviewing and evaluating employees.
• Coordinate with staff during events and in emergency situations.
• Assist in snow and ice removal which will include shoveling and the operation of snow removal equipment.

Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours* of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to safely operate equipment including tractors and mowers.
• Must have the ability to operate a chainsaw and must complete OPRHP sawyer training. This training will be provided by OPRHP.
• Must be able to work a variable schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
• Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor, including specialized historic restoration projects and repairs.
• Must be physically able to lift up to 50 pounds.
