The State Counsel Division in the Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a litigator to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Oil Spill Unit (OSU) of the Civil Recoveries Bureau in Albany. The OSU conducts civil litigation pursuant to Article 12 of the New York Navigation Law to recover state monies expended to clean up petroleum spills throughout New York state. Navigation Law cost-recovery claims require review and analysis of complex remediation projects, directed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The unit’s cases also involve ancillary areas of law such as real property, bankruptcy, and Surrogate’s Court matters.
Minimum Qualifications The selected attorney will be responsible for handling all phases of litigation including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and jury trials. The ideal candidate will also have judgment enforcement experience. Candidates for this position must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience as well as excellent legal analysis and writing skills and experience handling litigation, through trial, in New York state courts.
Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
