If you are passionate about government, eager to take on increased responsibility, and ready to contribute to high-impact statewide policy work, we encourage you to apply.
Position Overview
The Committee Director will report directly to the Chief of Staff and work collaboratively with the Legislative Director to support the development and execution of an ambitious, progressive legislative and policy agenda.
This role provides both legislative and general office support while serving as the primary staff lead for the Senator’s Committee work. The Committee Director must bring a strong team-oriented approach to problem solving, working closely with colleagues across the office to advance legislative priorities and respond effectively to emerging issues. The role also requires strong coordination across policy, communications, and operations functions to ensure the Senator’s legislative and committee priorities are advanced effectively.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
•Serve as Committee Director for the Senate Civil Service and Pensions Committee, including preparing and submitting committee agendas, reading bills during committee meetings, recording votes, preparing minutes, and submitting official actions to the appropriate authorities
•Handle and submit legislative paperwork, including bill introductions, bill amendments, and resolutions
•Draft legislative memoranda, budget letters, invitations, and other official correspondence
•Interface regularly with Senate Counsel and other legislative staff
•Greet visitors, answer Albany office phones, and respond to constituent inquiries as needed
•Conduct legislative and policy research
•Assist in tracking and maintaining records of requests for co-sponsorship, sponsorship, and other legislative actions
•Develop and maintain positive working relationships with advocates, lobbyists, community organizations, and other external stakeholders
•Meet with constituents, advocates, lobbyists, and stakeholders regarding legislative issues
Key policy areas include civil service, pensions, public and labor workforce issues, education, environmental justice, healthcare, criminal justice, housing policy, economic and social justice, and equity.
Minimum Qualifications Qualifications
•Strong writing skills
•Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
•Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative, and professional environment
•Strong knowledge of the New York State legislative process and policy development, or the ability to quickly develop expertise in legislative procedures and operations.
•Demonstrated experience addressing complex policy issues, including those that may involve legal considerations
The ideal candidate will be proactive, collaborative, and solutions-oriented, with strong analytical skills and project management abilities. The Committee Director must be able to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining political sensitivity and strong interpersonal relationships. A demonstrated commitment to public service and willingness to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends when necessary, is essential.
Who Thrives in This Role
This role is well suited for individuals who enjoy working in a fast-moving legislative environment, can balance multiple priorities at once, and value collaboration in solving complex policy and operational challenges. Successful candidates are highly organized, adaptable, and comfortable working in an environment where priorities may shift quickly during the legislative session.
Requirements
•Bachelor’s degree
•At least 2 years of professional experience in policy, government, or regulatory environments
•1–2 years of legislative experience preferred
•Experience in New York State and/or New York City government strongly preferred
