Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Interpretive Programs Assistant and the Lead Interpreter, the Historical Interpreter will perform duties at Johnson Hall State Historic Site that include but are not limited to:

• Delivering tours of the historic house and associated property for the general public, school classes, tourism and community groups.
• Deliver public outreach programs to schools and other interested community organizations.
• Assist with all aspects of special events and programming at the historic site.
• Assist with historic housekeeping, climate controls and collections care.
• Contribute written/visual interpretive content to be shared through agency publications and on the site’s social media.
• Conduct research on the history of the site and its residents.
• Answer phones, respond to public inquiries, and communicate effectively with staff and park visitors.
• Assist with visitor services, admissions and revenue handling.
• Maintain and promote a safe working environment by applying appropriate safety practices.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

Additional Comments PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Degree related to one of the following: Early American history, Native American studies, African/African American studies, Public History, Museum Studies.
• Experience or willingness to deliver living history interpretation.
• Experience conducting historical research and delivering public interpretation to diverse audiences, both in-person and virtually.
• Experience working or volunteering in a museum setting.

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently, as well as with others.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Must have basic computer use skills, including word processors, PowerPoint or other digital presentation software, and the ability to access digital research resources.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to move historic furniture and use step ladders.
