Job Specifics
Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the Park Worker 3 may be engaged in the performance or coordination of, but not limited to, the following tasks and activities as described:
• Answer a heavy volume of telephone inquiries from the public regarding fees, hours of operation, park rules and regulations, and general information concerning all Long Island State Parks and permit-related matters
• Handle or respond to inquiries concerning all Long Island State Parks and various permit-related matters via email or in person.
• Utilize Aspira to collect fees and maintain accurate daily revenue reports while following proper revenue procedures.
• Assist in keeping an accurate inventory of all permits
• Assist in accurately entering data into various computer databases to quickly and efficiently process a multitude of various types of permits
• Assist in reviewing various permit applications submitted for accuracy and validity, contacting patrons when there is a discrepancy
• Communicate frequently with Regional Administration, Facility Managers, Park Police and other state agencies regarding approval and coordination of various permit requests and special events
• Communicate with the public in a friendly, helpful, and courteous manner
• Assist Permit Supervisor as needed
• Support the Regional Recreation Department as needed for special events/projects
• Perform park-related duties such as refuse removal, litter removal around the building, cleaning structures, etc.
• Other related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in the operation and/or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility;
OR - One year of experience in any of the following fields:
• Law enforcement or security
• Firefighting
• Emergency Medical Services
• Environmental education or stewardship
• Natural resources management (e.g., forest management, wildlife management/preservation)
• Historic preservation or interpretation
• Landscaping or grounds maintenance
OR - One year of military service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces;
OR - Thirty (30) semester credit hours of college-level coursework from an accredited* college or university;
OR - Completion of a two-year technical/trades school program;
OR - Two years of experience as a trade assistant working under the direct supervision of a skilled tradesperson
*Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Reassignment Qualifications:
Two (2) years of clerical experience. The candidate must be able to work well under pressure, multitask, be a self?starter, maintain confidentiality, and possess excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills. Experience with Microsoft Excel and good typing/computer skills.
Additional Comments Positions located within Suffolk County are also eligible to receive an additional $4,000 annual downstate adjustment.
Salary Information:
Park Worker 3, SG-9 (CSEA) $46,641 - $56,413 (the starting salary indicated combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). Similarly, the job rate posted is a combination of the statutory job rate ($52,413) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).
Operational Needs:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment
• Must have the ability to follow directions and communicate with staff and the public, and respond to patrons' concerns or complaints in an effective and positive manner
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and good typing/computer skills
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. and be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor, and stand for long periods of time
• Ability to do simple math such as add, subtract, multiply, divide, read, comprehend written and/or verbal material and instructions
