Duties Description Position Summary:
SUNY Cortland is accepting applications for full-time Cleaner positions as part of an ongoing recruitment effort to establish a hiring pool for current and future vacancies. Applicants will be contacted for interviews as needed, and those who advance will be added to the hiring pool. This pool will be used to fill vacancies as they arise. Work schedules will vary depending on position availability.
Cleaners perform a variety of routine manual tasks that require light to heavy physical effort. Responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining assigned areas within residence halls, academic buildings, and the surrounding campus grounds and sidewalks. Major Responsibilities:
General Cleaning
• Use mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubbers, and other cleaning implements to wash, wax, vacuum, and shampoo carpets, floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls, partitions, windows from the inside of buildings, etc.
• Collect trash and recyclables from offices, centralized trash locations, designated trash rooms and dormitories, and transport to the exterior dumpster.
• Use hand-dusting equipment to dust assigned areas.
• Use hand-operated equipment and detergents to scrub and clean all areas of lavatories, such as sinks, showers, urinals, toilets, etc.
• Use designated equipment to polish wood and metal fixtures and equipment.
• Assist with cleaning for absent employees as directed or assigned.
Furniture Coordination and Event Support
• Move furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning and care functions.
• Move furniture within the building for office moves.
• Set up furniture and equipment in assigned areas, such as athletic fields, gymnasiums, and conference or meeting rooms, as needed.
Lighting and High Areas
• Use appropriate equipment such as ladders and aerial lifts to clean light fixtures and replace light bulbs in high places.
Maintenance and Grounds
• Remove snow and salt sidewalks or stairs adjacent to the assigned building entrance.
• Use manual and/or mechanical equipment to occasionally clean sidewalks, yards, and driveways.
Safety and Hazard Removal
• For all assigned tasks, pick up and remove any hazardous items from floors and furniture, and place them in designated receptacles or appropriate locations.
• Notify supervisor of any safety hazard that cannot be mitigated on site.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Ability to safely use hand tools and motorized equipment such as floor buffers and vacuums.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to understand and carry out both verbal and simple written instructions.
• Ability to identify and report defects, hazards, or dangerous conditions to supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications Required Qualifications:
• There are no education or experience requirements for this position. This position is a labor class position and as such is not subject to selection on the basis of seniority. • • Selection of the candidates shall be at the campus’ discretion from among those who apply.
• Applicants must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
• Physical strength and agility are required to lift/carry/work on ladders, power hand tools, and maintenance equipment. Must be able to work on scaffolding and knees. Working conditions may include working at heights and in confined spaces.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Previous cleaning and/or labor-type work experience preferred.
