Job Specifics
Duties Description The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has an exciting opportunity to support the statewide Park Ranger Program as a Park and Recreation Specialist 1.
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Prepares various reports, including reports on bureau spending.
• Reviews patron and employee feedback to inform program decisions.
• Assists with bureau budget preparation and justification.
• Assigns, reviews, trains, and evaluates work of lower-level seasonal employees.
• Controls access to parking to and from park facilities during peak periods.
• May be assigned responsibility for specific park or facility programs and activities.
• Keeps inventory of training equipment and monitors its condition.
• Instructs classes related to Park Ranger program.
• Assists in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures and, assisting and directing staff, and working with patrons to minimize potential problems.
• Coordinates logistical aspects of routine programs and special events including security, traffic flow, and cleanup.
• Performs a variety of tasks including carrying out small projects.
• Serves as a member of a project team to complete segments of larger more complex projects
• Serve as assistant to Director of Park Rangers for projects by providing determinations or recommendations based on research and analysis.
• Conducts field inspections to assist in the gathering and analysis of data and/or to ensure proper implementation of the program
• Reviews and analyzes incident reports and statistical summaries and provides recommendations.
• Reviews and responds to inquiries from the general public in shared mailboxes.
• Attends various events to represent Park Ranger Program.
Minimum Qualifications One year of experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, business operations, park operations, or in an organized recreation program.
Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• The duties of this position require you to have and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows you to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. Failure to maintain a
valid driver’s license may result in removal from this position.
Preferred qualification - the ability to obtain and maintain a valid NYS Security Guard License and Registration
Operational needs and preferred qualifications will be discussed at the time of the interview and appointment. Failure to maintain proper licensing may result in removal from this position.
