Job Specifics
Duties Description As an Associate Industrial Hygienist within the Division of Safety& Health (DOSH), the incumbent will:
• Handle complex health inspections and consultations at worksites to determine compliance with applicable state/federal standards and to identify health violations/hazards, particularly those associated with exposure to toxic or explosive chemicals and substances in the form of dust, fibers (including asbestos),fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals and pathogenic organisms.
• Identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light of various types, and other physical energies including electromagnetic emissions.
• Based upon the results of the field testing and/or laboratory analyses taken from on-site inspections, the incumbent may confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation action.
• May be responsible for directing, supervising, and reviewing the technical activities of hygiene staff engaged in inspections and/or consultations.
• May conduct training for staff or public/private sector employers and employees.
• Will be expected to use a computer in performance of these duties.
• Employees will be required to travel, multiple days/nights, for training purposes, not to exceed one week at a time.

Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree* in physical, biological, or engineering science and three years of industrial hygiene experience**.
*Your degree must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories,you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of companies that provide these services (fees must be paid to the company you choose) can be found at: http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You will be required to provide this information to the hiring agency at the time of interview.
**Industrial Hygiene experience is defined as anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. This includes, but is not limited to quantifying hazards, identifying risks, sampling and measuring environmental stressors such as chemical or physical agents. Working with employer interpreting standards, discussing abatement measures, and recommending controls. Training employees on safety protocols.
It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Reassignment Qualifications:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least oneyear of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as an Associate Industrial Hygienist; if you have less than one year,you must be reachable on the current Associate Industrial Hygienist eligible list for this location, if one exists.
52.7 Non-Competitive Promotion (NCP) Qualifications:
To be eligible for NCP, candidates must be in the Department of Labor promotion field and have one year or more of permanent,contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as a Senior Industrial Hygienist. If 3 or fewer qualified Department of Labor Senior Industrial Hygienist respond as interested, Civil Service may
approve the permanent appointment of one of the qualified Senior Industrial Hygienist without further examination.
Note: Non-competitive refers to not competing in an examination; the appointment will be competitive.
Provisional Qualifications:
NYS Department of Labor Employees Only
Candidates must have one year of permanent, contingent permanent, or 55b/c service as a Senior Industrial Hygienist. The appointed candidate would have to take, pass and be reachable on the next holding of the examination to be appointed permanently.

Additional Comments This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.
Some positions may require a medical examination prior to appointment, and you will be responsible for the payment for the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to the positions that require this examination may also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.

Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk; and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
