Job Specifics

Duties Description A Research Scientist 1 is requested to support the Viral Encephalitis Laboratory (VEL) within the Division of Infectious Diseases Viral Disease’s Virology Laboratory. The incumbent will research, perform, and maintain, clinical real-time PCR and RT-PCR assays for the detection of viruses in human specimens; research, develop, and perform validation experiments for new assays and test methods, and research modifications to existing test methods; participate in quality assurance activities and documentation; and contribute to laboratory activities within the greater Virology Laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience* in an appropriate field.

*Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with molecular methods for the detection and/or characterization of viral pathogens, including next generation sequencing and analysis techniques. Experience with developing or assessing molecular methods. Experience handling human pathogens. Experience writing and presenting oral scientific communications.

Additional Comments This position will require the incumbent will meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements.
