Job Specifics
Duties Description -Security Services Assistant 1 (SSA-1’s) function primarily in a building guard/watchman capacity. The primary function of the SSA-1 is to observe and report.
-Reports any suspicious, irregular or dangerous situations to the New York State University Police at Albany.
-Patrols public areas of the Residence Halls and exterior areas. SSA-1’s may assist Residence Assistant staff (RA) on rounds securing the quad at night. Also required to perform additional rounds per shift.
-Follows instructions regarding signing in and out of guests, as well as checking and verifying student identification.
-Responsible for equipment that may be issued such as:
1. Log book
2. Keys
3. Radio
4. SUNY Card
-SSA-1’s assigned to the academic buildings will be familiar with their opening and closing hours as well as activities within the assigned buildings.
-Assists in the evacuation of the building in the event of fire or fire drills.
-Provides information to visitors.
-Enforces campus parking regulations as required.
-Assists University Police Officers as required.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NY HELPS):
Registration as a Security Guard by the NYS DOS. Valid NYS Driver's License required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (NON-NY HELPS):
Candidates must have a reachable score on the University at Albany Security Services Assistant 1 Exam List OR
Be a current NYS employee and have a current permanent appointment with 1 year of service as a Security Services Assistant 1, or in a title eligible to transfer to Security Services Assistant 1 OR
Be a former NYS employee eligible for reinstatement to the title of Security Services Assistant 1
Valid NYS Driver's License required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.
May be filled from a mandatory reemployment list if one is in effect at the time of appointment.
