Job Specifics

Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in the Genesee Region is seeking a Trail Laborer to assist in maintaining and enhancing the trail systems within Letchworth State Park and the Genesee Region. The Trail Laborer will work as part of a team to perform a wide range of trail maintenance and construction tasks. The Trail Laborer will report directly to the assigned Park Supervisor 1, SG-11, or other higher-level staff. The position will work with up to four trail crew members and assist volunteer group projects. This is a 40 hour/week, Monday – Thursday, seasonal position. The typical workday will be 7:00am – 5:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch. Housing is not provided.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:
• Construct dimensional lumber stairs, retaining walls, bridges, and boardwalks.
• Construct new trails and improve existing tread and drainage systems.
• Perform regular upkeep on stone staircases and retaining walls.
• Provide general maintenance for park facilities.
• Remove hazards such as fallen trees and debris using chainsaws or other tools.
• Groom winter trails and remove risk trees in coordination with NYS Parks operations staff during the off-season.
• Work on uneven and steep terrain, carry and move tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
• Operate both hand and power tools in various outdoor environments and weather conditions.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensuring compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor and to lift up to 100 pounds.
• Must have the ability to work on uneven and steep terrain.
• Must have experience or familiarity with using hand tools, power tools, and performing/troubleshooting basic tool maintenance.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Two years of experience with outdoor labor, particularly trail maintenance and construction or any of the following: dry stone masonry, carpentry, landscaping, general construction.
• Experience operating a chainsaw.
• Experience operating equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, and Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs).
