Job Specifics
Duties Description The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in the Genesee Region is seeking a Parks & Recreation Aide to assist agency staff in the management of trees and shrubs throughout the Genesee Region.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Perform tree care operations, from aerial lifts and the ground, including tree removal and pruning.
• Perform planting, stump grinding, brush chipping and integrative pest and vegetation management.
• Operate and maintain various equipment including chainsaws, aerial lifts, dump trucks, chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, other heavy equipment, and hand tools used in tree care and park operations.
• May interact with park patrons to resolve concerns, answer questions, and give general directions.
• May perform other park-related operations as needed.
• Perform work during emergency events as directed by the State Emergency Management Operations Center and/or NYSOPRHP management.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be willing to obtain NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) Sawyer Certification.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
• Must have the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of power-driven mechanical equipment, including trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders and skid steers.
• Must have the ability to properly identify native and ornamental park trees.
• Must have the ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends in the case of emergencies.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• One year of experience in tree care or forestry operations.
• Knowledge of tree growth and physiological characteristics.
The hourly rate will depend on the experience of the candidate.
