Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications EITHER 1) Reachable on the Civil Service eligible list (if you are on the eligible list for this title, you will automatically be canvassed for this position if your score is reachable for potential appointment); OR 2) Eligible for reassignment by virtue of having permanent competitive service as a Teachers’ Retirement Examiner 1; OR 3) Eligible for transfer under the provisions of Section 70.1,52.6 or 70.4 of Civil Service Law by virtue of having one year of permanent competitive service in an appropriate title.
Duties Description The incumbent duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Examiners in the Member Benefits department review and audit member files, perform complex benefit calculations and input and/or review data contained in computer files. They also communicate with members and retirees to discuss a wide range of retirement issues. They prepare files for the monthly retirement payroll and confirm that benefit payments are accurate in accordance with the System's Rules and Regulations, the Education Law, and the NYS Retirement and Social Security Law. Specific duties in the Service Retirement unit include:
Under the supervision of the TRE-2, the incumbent will determine eligibility for service retirement benefits and/or post retirement death benefits. Written and phone communications with members, retirees, beneficiaries, school administrators, internal departments, etc. for a variety of purposes; including notice of benefit determination, acquisition of required support material, and explanations of retirement processing, Domestic Relations Orders (DRO), retirement options, prior service, transfers, loans and other benefits.
The position may also be deployed to other department sections depending on work priorities.
Performs other assigned tasks consistent with the Civil Service Classification Standards for the title.
