Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: For permanent appointment, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as Recreation Therapist OR be reachable on the Recreation Therapist Civil Service eligible list OR be a current NYS employee eligible for transfer under §70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
§70.1 Transfer
To be eligible for transfer under §70.1, candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in an title allocated to salary grade 12 or higher AND
I. A bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation; OR
II. A bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education or Adaptive Physical Education AND one year of experience in planning and administering a therapeutic recreation* program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic recreational activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals that are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for chemical dependency; OR
III. Current credentials as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) issued by the National Council For Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
If the eligible list contains fewer than 3 acceptors, a provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must have:
I. A bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation; OR
II. A bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education or Adaptive Physical Education AND one year of experience in planning and administering a therapeutic recreation* program which involved developing and coordinating therapeutic recreational activities for geriatric patients/residents, individuals with developmental disabilities, individuals with psychiatric disabilities, individuals that are physically challenged, or individuals in treatment for chemical dependency; OR
III. Current credentials as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) issued by the National Council For Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
*A therapeutic recreation program is defined as a professional service that assists people with disabilities and other limitations to have a leisure life-style that encompasses functional independence, health and well-being through treatment, education and participation. Therapeutic recreation is practiced in clinical, community and residential treatment settings.
**Leads to a maximum salary of $53,606 with annual performance advances.
Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf (NYSSD) is seeking applicants to fill a Recreation Therapist position. The incumbent of this position will plan and conduct activities for students, working individually or as a member of a team. The incumbent will participate in team meetings, recreation/leisure assessment and evaluation, and will be required to requisition, store and maintain equipment and supplies, in order to bring about positive change in the students’ mental, physical and/or social behavior. Major responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:
• Coordinate and schedule on- and off-campus activities such as educational field trips, home and away athletic events, skills and drills, workouts, and visits from groups such as the Central Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI);
• Act as Director of Athletics and represent the NYSSD at league and conference meetings;
• Supervise and train staff in Water Safety Instructor/Lifeguard certification;
• Coordinate weekly and monthly on- and off-campus event schedules with kitchen, transportation, and dorm staff;
• Coordinate bus schedules and drivers for off campus events;
• Develop and maintain the athletic/recreation budget;
• Meet with the Leadership Team upon request to review budget and activity schedule; and
• Advocate for the school when hosting tournaments.
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Filling of this position is contingent upon Division of Budget approval. This will be a permanent appointment.
