Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Employees who have permanent status in the posted title and are interested in reassignment OR employees who meet the qualifications stated below are encouraged to respond to this posting.

Provisional Pending Examination:
Bachelor's degree or higher in fire protection engineering AND a New York State Professional Engineering License with current registration.

Duties Description Review and analyze building plans, develop technical reports and recommend action necessary to correct any deficiencies of the facilities owned, operated and licensed by the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) for compliance with the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Typical duties include, but are not limited to:
• Perform reviews and report on the design and installation of automatic sprinkler systems, stand pipe and hose systems, fire and smoke detection and alarm systems and standards related to the storage of hazardous materials at OPWDD facilities.
• Analyze facilities and facilities systems design as it relates to flammability, for hazards when subjected to fire and for effectiveness and appropriateness of different systems with certain structures and building materials.
• Evaluate facilities’ fire protection delivery systems as it relates to the type of structure the building was designed to accommodate.
• Review and evaluate current hazard materials programs at facilities and propose new programs.
• Perform at OPWDD facilities any post-fire analysis and investigation for determination of cause and discuss with representatives proposed changes based on findings of post-fire analysis.
• Act as the technical expert and liaison with OPWDD staff on matters related to building, fire and energy codes.

Additional Comments This position may require significant travel, extended hours, for long periods of time, especially during major emergencies and disasters.
