Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made. If you are appointed provisionally, you will have to take and pass the next Civil Service examination for this title when it is administered. Employees appointed provisionally must be reachable on the resulting eligible list for that title or their employment in the position will end.
The minimum requirements for taking the examination are: Five years of experience assembling, inspecting, maintaining or repairing locomotives or other rolling stock in a locomotive or railroad car assembly shop, repair shop, or running service maintenance shop, or inspecting such equipment for a public regulatory agency.
Substitution: College study in mechanical or electrical engineering or mechanical engineering technology may be substituted for up to two years of the required five years of experience at the rate of 30 semester credit hours equaling one year of experience.
Duties Description As a Railroad Equipment Inspector, you will make technical inspections of railroad equipment including locomotives, freight cars and passenger cars to determine adherence to New York State Department of Transportation and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standard for operating conditions. The position requires the employee be certified by the FRA through on the job training, classroom training and continuous follow up training in order to stay current with all changes and updates to the Federal Register. Out of state travel will be required in order to attend FRA training classes. The incumbent will periodically be required to be on call 24/7 to respond to unusual occurrences, derailments or other railroad related emergencies. The position is a field position with daily travel required to various railroad classification yards, sidings and repair facilities within an assigned area.
Some overnight travel will be necessary. Applicants must meet the physical & medical standards established by the Director of Employee Health Services and must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle. Further duties will be discussed at interview.
