Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications A High School diploma and six years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use; or Bachelor s Degree with specialization in machine design and two years of experience in the construction, design, operation, and repair of special machines, tools, and/or equipment fabricated for laboratory use.
Duties Description Working for the Division of Operations, Bureau of Maintenance & Technical Services, duties include but are not limited to:
• Develop, design, repair, install, operate, and/or maintain laboratory devices and apparatus used for scientific research by scientists, research engineers, chemists, physicists, physicians, and other scientists.
• Work closely with research scientists throughout the testing and modifying of laboratory equipment process to ensure the equipment meets the requirements for the laboratory procedure.
• Respond to emergency service requests across the State, responsible for troubleshooting and making prompt repairs to avoid potential loss of revenue, where applicable.
• Ensure projects are kept on schedule. Ensure quality of work is maintained to a high standard and lab facility is kept organized and in optimized working condition.
• Perform the more complex design, construction, operation, and repair of laboratory devices and equipment.
• Evaluate, modify, design, fabricate, operate, and maintain various electromechanical laboratory devices and equipment.
• Design, construct, modify and/or redesign scientific and medical instrumentation.
• Correct manufacturing design deficiencies through appropriate modifications; develop, test, demonstrate and prepare written instructions regarding the proper operation of various laboratory equipment.
• Repair and calibrate laboratory equipment and instruments; coordinate with scientists in various disciplines to ensure laboratory equipment design/modification meets experiment requirements.
• Obtain replacement parts, supplies and service from vendors or manufacturers.
• Research new technology to improve or replace existing system with off the shelf solutions.
• Supervise subordinate Laboratory Equipment Designers and/or lower-level staff assigned to perform various tasks in the design, construction, installation, operation, and repair of laboratory equipment. Responsible for overseeing emergency service requests.
• Responsible for overseeing work done by outside electromechanical laboratory devices and equipment vendors.
• Work closely with Radio Communications section engineers and technicians and assist in the programming, installation, maintenance, and repair of communications equipment.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response. Must be available to respond to after-hours emergencies.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
