Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications CURRENT NYS EMPLOYEES:
Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service as a Safety & Health Inspector, Grade 16 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the NYS Civil Service Law.

OR

Provisional Minimum Qualifications: one year of experience in a position allocated to a Grade 8 or higher
AND
EITHER 1: one year of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, fire safety and preventions, or building design relating to fire codes.
OR 2: 30 semester college credits in occupational safety and health, industrial safety, fire safety and prevention, or building design relating to fire codes.
Or 3: NYS Firefighter 1 certification.

NY HELPS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Four years of experience in the field of occupational safety and health, industrial safety, industrial hygiene, construction safety, fire safety and prevention, or building design relating to fire codes.
Substitution: an associate degree in a related field can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s in a related field degree can substitute for four years of experience.
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Duties Description 1. Visits and inspects work sites and work zones, including on Authority rights of way, for safety and health hazard and compliance issues, and makes recommendations for necessary improvements.
2. Uses accepted industry tools and equipment and performs work-site environmental monitoring.
3. Promotes employee awareness of safety and health regulations, policies, and procedures.
4. Assists in coordinating a comprehensive employee accident and injury prevention program.
5. Assists with the development and conducting of safety training programs.
6. May serve as liaison to various regulatory agencies.

Sick Leave at Half Pay eligibility if requirements are met.
Sick Leave is credited at the rate of one-half day each biweekly pay period up to a total of 165 days.
Paid Family Leave benefit, which provides job-protected paid time off for covered family leave.
Disability Benefits Program which provides disability benefits for an off the job injury or illness.
Membership in the New York State and Local Retirement System, as well as optional enrollment in the NYS Deferred Compensation Plan.
Tuition Assistance Program which reimburses 90% of tuition costs for approved courses up to 15 credit hours per year.
New York's 529 College Savings Program which provides New York families with a tax-advantaged way to save for college.
Flexible Spending Program, which allows employees to set aside pre-tax payroll deductions for eligible health care and dependent care expenses.
Employees with 20+ years of State/Authority service may receive up to an additional five days of vacation leave accruals annually.
Longevity Pay: Employees with five years of satisfactory service at or above the maximum salary of their grade will be eligible to have salary advanced to the First Longevity, 10 years of satisfactory service will advance to the Second Longevity, and 15 years of satisfactory service will advance to the Third Longevity. Longevity pay has a positive impact on retirement.
Employees are paid bi-weekly, with no lag time.
