Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Thirty (30) semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Duties Description This position is based out of DEC’s Central Office in Albany and will work with the Reptile, Amphibian, and Invertebrate Unit biologists on data management and database maintenance.

Duties will primarily be office based and will involve working with DEC staff and external partners on data compilation for herpetofauna in NYS, as well as data entry and quality checking of information related to any of the taxa the Unit is responsible for. Incumbent will also assist with mapping species distribution data in ArcGIS, responding to data requests, and answering public inquiries as needed.

The incumbent will have strong data management, organizational, and communication skills, with excellent attention to detail and experience with maintaining large datasets. Proficiency with using Microsoft Office applications (Access, Excel, Word, and Outlook) is required, and a familiarity with ESRI products (ArcGIS) is strongly preferred. Knowledge of New York’s herpetofauna and/or invertebrates, as well as experience working with these species, is also preferred but not required.

As part of the Wildlife Diversity Section, the incumbent may be asked to assist wildlife staff with the implementation of other programs/tasks as assigned. Limited opportunities may also exist to assist with fieldwork for at-risk species.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2025. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
