Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, or natural sciences and three years of post-degree professional research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's degree in the appropriate field and two years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in coding for scientific instrumentation and calculations, preferrably in Python or similar language. Experience working in an accredited environmental testing laboratory and/or nuclear industry, including knowledge of Quality Assurance/Quality Control practices, record keeping, and adherance to Standard Operating Procedures. Knowledge of nuclear instrumentation such as liquid scintillation counting, gamma spectrometry, and gas proportional counting, including set up, use, and troubleshooting. Familiarity with radiation analysis software such as GENIE-2000.

Duties Description Under direct supervision of a Research Scientist, the incumbent will provide technical and scientific support to the Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry’s Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory (NCL). Specific duties include:

Research and perform radiochemical analysis. (75%)
• Receiving, preserving, and accessioning of incoming samples; distributes to various analysts if necessary.
• Using nuclear chemistry calculations and analysis software, research, calculate and report analytical results for all routine analysis samples.
• Assists with verification of calculation codes.
• Assists with researching, troubleshooting, and general maintenance of radiological detection equipment.
• Conducts research into methods development; evaluates and documents new procedures with supervision.
• Research and trouble-shoot problems related to analysis of samples as they arise and work to develop and implement resolution.

Quality Assurance. (10%)
• Participate in day-to-day quality assurance activities for all radioactivity measurements in environmental and food samples including instrument performance checks, proficiency tests, and task related to laboratory accreditation.

Research. (10%)
• Assists Principal Investigators in conduct of research projects, conducts literature searches, data review and calculations, methods development, and generates data for publication.

Emergency Response. (5%)
• Participates in nuclear emergency response activities, including exercises and analytical events. Research and develop methods as needed, participates in sample receiving, data processing, and other areas as needed, and trains staff in support of emergency response.
• Trains Wadsworth staff/analysts to follow radiological emergency laboratory procedures.
• Other related duties as assigned.

Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
