Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications Assistant Research Scientist, Grade 14: a bachelor’s degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, AND at least one year of post degree professional research experience in the appropriate field. Thirty graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Research Scientist 1, Grade 18: A bachelor's degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, AND at least two years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience.

Research Scientist 2, Grade 22: A bachelors degree in toxicology, environmental health sciences, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, epidemiology, immunology, industrial hygiene, pharmacology, or a related field, AND at least three years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least 2 years of post-degree professional research experience; OR a doctoral degree in one of the above fields.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will possess a master’s or doctoral degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental chemistry or atmospheric science. They will display strong organizational and project management skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to adapt to various circumstances; evaluate large data sets; conduct data analysis; and synthesizing results for written reports.
Center for Environmental Health will have a preference for candidates that have the ability to critically evaluate and interpret scientific data, air sampling plans, building blueprints and reports. Additionally, the preferred candidate will have an understanding of building sciences and the influence of ventilation systems and environmental factors, such as building materials, energy type, and extreme weather events on indoor air quality (IAQ), and the environment.

Duties Description The Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA) is responsible for evaluating the exposure and health risks associated with air contaminants. The Research Scientist will provide technical support for staff involved in New York State BTSA initiatives related to air quality and health including providing expertise on community air monitoring plans; evaluating ambient air quality standards; reviewing soil vapor intrusion data; evaluating fugitive emission and their impact on surrounding communities.
The Research Scientist will be responsible for conducting indoor air investigations and will have influence on building systems, code requirements on environmental and occupant health including fuels, energy efficiency, insulation, air leakage, pollutant infiltration, and indoor air quality (IAQ). They will also have an understanding of the principles of experimental design, health effects of common indoor and outdoor air contaminants, exposure assessment, engineering principles, statistical analyses, and air quality instrumentation. The Research Scientist will prepare timely responses to public inquiries on a variety of environmental health subjects and interact with local authorities and code enforcement officials on issues related to building conditions and operations to improve air quality.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
