Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS)* and applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications to be considered for this position:

Applicants must have proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one of the following:
• qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below, OR
• one year of full-time qualifying experience as listed below.

This title includes a traineeship opportunity and applicants must meet one of the following:
Either 1. A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology as listed below;
Or 2. Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time engineering experience as listed below.

Engineer Trainees must possess one of the above and serve a minimum of 52 weeks and a maximum of 104 weeks probation. Appointees who obtain proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam may advance to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20, after one-year of service; those who fail to pass the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) exam by the end of the second year of appointment will be terminated.
Applicants may be appointed to this position if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title OR are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 20 and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Qualifying degrees: Aerospace Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architectural Engineering Technology, Building Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Technology, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.

Qualifying experience: One year of full-time experience in mechanical engineering.

Duties Description • Perform engineering design and redesign, review of plumbing, piping, fire protection systems, and heating and ventilating systems for new and rehabilitation construction projects. These projects may involve design changes for mechanical systems of existing facilities, which can present complex compatibility issues with plans for existing building structures.
• Prepare mechanical specifications, mechanical estimates, and studies for energy conservation for the mechanical design projects.
• Supervise and review consultant work.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• May supervise subordinate or consultant staff.
• Frequent travel may be required.

Additional Comments *There is no examination required for appointment to a NY HELPS position. Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period.

At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected that NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to take an exam. Employees will then be afforded with all the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified
