Job Specifics

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of experience in large-scale cooking.

Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Cook position in the at the New York State School for the Deaf. Under direct supervision of a Head Cook in the Food Service Department, the incumbent of this position will prepare and cook a variety of foods for residents, or students within the facility. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Prepares and cooks a variety of foods for residents, employees, or students within the facility;
• Reviews menus to determine type and quantity of food to be prepared;
• Bakes, roasts, broils, fries and steams food as called for in recipes;
• Observes and tastes food and adds ingredients and seasoning to improve texture and flavor;
• Tests food for completion of cooking time and adjusts heat controls;
• Arranges for distribution of food by placing into service trays or packing food into hot boxes for shipment to separate dining areas;
• May personally serve main course of meal in cafeteria setting;
• Make specific work assignments in kitchen and pantry areas;
• Directs and/or may personally perform the general cleaning after each meal;
• Provides oral and written instructions regarding materials, utensils, and procedures to be performed;
• Demonstrates proper preparation and cooking procedures;
• Oversees and inspects performance to ensure instructions, procedures and standards are observed; and
• Ensures that proper sanitation and storage procedures are always followed.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This will be a permanent, competitive appointment Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. The work schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday 5:30 am – 2:00 pm.

*This position leads to a maximum salary of $56,743 based on annual performance advances.
