Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent performs journey-level tasks and projects involving masonry, plaster work, and stonework. Work assignments will require the incumbent to travel in park vehicles to other facilities within the Palisades Interstate Parks Region.

The job duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
• Plan and lay out work, including ordering materials and equipment.
• Perform routine masonry and repairs, including finish work.
• Perform restoration work on historic buildings and structures that will retain the original fabric.
• Monitor and train crews on routine masonry skills, safety practices, and supervise crews on a variety of masonry projects.
• This position involves reading blueprints and project plans as well as supplying rough sketches for work to be performed as well as having a working knowledge of modern code compliance.
• Lay building materials such as stone, brick, concrete, and cinder block to construct or repair walls, partitions, utility manholes, firebrick linings in furnaces, and chimneys; smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, and sidewalks to specified texture.
• Mix or direct the mixing of concrete, spreading concrete to specified depth and workable consistency.
• This position involves application of ceramic tiles to walls, floors, and ceilings, including the preparation of surfaces by removing damaged tiles.
• Apply coats of plaster to walls and ceilings, including the preparation of surfaces, mixing of plaster, application of plaster, and the erection of scaffolding if needed.
• Estimate labor, materials, tools, and equipment necessary for the project.
• Observe and inspect the work while in progress, and again when completed to ensure that the job is done properly.
• Adhere to the agency’s Code of Conduct Policy and ensure compliance with all guidelines, policies, and procedures in the performance of daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience* in masonry under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program;

OR

An equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in masonry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services;

OR

Successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Mason & Plasterer) traineeship or a two-year masonry training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

*Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

*If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Location Pay:
The hiring rate will be the sum of the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 12 ($50,425) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000). The job rate will be the sum of the statutory job rate ($61,548) and the Downstate Adjustment ($4,000).

Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Must be certified as a scaffold competent person or obtain training and certification within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be qualified and/or certified in both aerial and bucket lifts or obtain training and certification within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and adhere to safe working practices.
• Must possess or be able to complete lift training and fall protection training within the probationary period as a term and condition of employment.
