Job Specifics

Duties Description Under the supervision of higher-level personnel, the selected candidate may be engaged in the performance or coordination of, but not limited to, the following tasks and activities at the arboretum:

• Perform horticultural tasks in a greenhouse environment including general plant care and maintenance, watering, pruning, transplanting, fertilizing, operating greenhouse systems, etc.
• Perform specialized tasks such as care and cultivation of tropical plants, bedding plants and display-type horticultural crops including watering, planting, pruning, mulching and other skilled duties.
• Selectively formulate and apply herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and growth regulators to plant material to control and manage insects, diseases and optimize plant growth.
• Assist with the installation of seasonal displays inside and outside the greenhouse complex.
• Supervise lower-level staff to perform duties such as general maintenance and operation of a greenhouse complex and care of a wide variety of plants.
• Oversee or assist in the maintenance and operation of the greenhouse complex including the coordination of special projects, working during weekends and holidays as needed.
• Assist with the supervision and training of seasonal staff and volunteers involved in the operation and maintenance of their greenhouses.
• Operate light trucks and other motor vehicles as required in the performance of duties.
• Operate greenhouse systems such as vents, water systems, fertilizer application devices, etc.
• Call for assistance in the event of a power or heating outages.
• Perform other duties relating to the greenhouse operations as required.

Minimum Qualifications One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility.

In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR

One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR

An Associate’s or higher-level degree*, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR

Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.

*Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Park Worker 3.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Selected candidate must obtain a NYS certified pesticide license 3A within six months of appointment and retain the license as a term and condition of employment.
• Selected candidate must be qualified and medically cleared to wear a respirator and have knowledge of good safety practices.
• Ability to operate vents, cold frames, and other basic greenhouse mechanical systems.
• Ability to interact with the public and help to provide information and enforce general rules.
• Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor and to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, and ability to lift, carry or move equipment and materials of different weight and sizes
• Ability to set up and work from ladders.


PREFERRED QULAIFICATION(s):
General knowledge of greenhouse operations.

SCHEDULE INFORMATION:
This position will be expected to work weekends and various shifts, holidays and special events as required to provide effective greenhouse coverage.

The listed hiring rate combines the statutory hiring rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($46,641) with Location Pay ($4,000). Similarly, the posted job rate is a combination of the statutory job rate ($56,413) with the Location Pay ($4,000).
