Job Specifics
Duties Description The Lead Cemetery Technician is responsible for the dignified burial of veterans and their eligible family members, ensuring all interments meet the highest standards of honor and respect. This role also includes maintaining cemetery grounds, horticulture, and landscaping to provide a serene and beautiful resting place for those who served.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Conduct the burial of casketed and cremated remains with precision and respect.
• Prepare burial plots, including excavation and closing of graves.
• Operate and maintain burial-related equipment.
• Ensure all burials adhere to VA Cemetery Regulations and Protocols.
Grounds and Horticultural Maintenance:
• Maintain turf, trees, shrubs, and floral arrangements to ensure a well-kept appearance.
• Perform seasonal landscaping, including mowing, trimming, and leaf removal.
• Conduct irrigation and fertilization to promote healthy plant life.
• Assist in maintaining memorial markers, headstones, and monuments.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance:
• Operate and maintain tools and machinery, including mowers, trimmers, and backhoes.
• Ensure cemetery structures, roads, and pathways remain clean and accessible.
• Assist in winter maintenance, including snow and ice removal.
Minimum Qualifications Four years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work, of which two years involved supervisory experience over subordinates.
OR
One year as a Supervisor of Grounds.
Note:
When required to operate a motor vehicle, applicants must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated. As determined by the State agency or campus, some positions may be required to possess appropriate license or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides and other treatments.

Acceptable proof:
Experience: A letter on letterhead from your employer that includes the names and titles of supervisors, the duties performed during the training period and specific dates of employment.?

A copy of a trade’s union card.
Per Agreement between the Civil Service Employees Association, Inc. and the State of New York, Article 45 (d) the requirement to prove qualification shall rest with the employee. Candidates who do not submit appropriate documentary proof that they meet the minimum qualifications will not be considered for appointment.??
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, or a related field.
• Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment and landscaping tools.
• Understanding of burial procedures, cemetery operations (preferred).
• May be exposed to all types of weather conditions for long periods of time including extreme heat and cold, wind, rain, snow, ice, etc., when performing duties.
NOTE: IN ORDER TO AWARD THE PROPER CREDIT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE, RESUMES MUST INCLUDE MONTH AND YEAR FOR START AND END DATES. IF ANY OF THIS EXPERIENCE IS LESS THAN FULL TIME YOU MUST INDICATE THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF HOURS WORKED PER WEEK.
Additional Comments Operational Needs:
• Selected candidate must be willing to attend National Cemetery Administration training for cemetery staff.
• Travel is required (approximately 30%), including evening and weekends, depending on mission and assignment.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid, unrestricted New York State motor vehicle operator’s license.
