Job Specifics
Duties Description The Research Scientist 5, Grade 31 (RS 5) will work under broad supervision of the Division of Vaccine Excellence while reporting directly to the division’s Bureau of Vaccine Confidence Director (Public Health Physician 2). The RS 5 will direct lower-level Research Scientists throughout the Division and other staff engaged in research projects. The primary responsibility of this role is to formulate and carry out complete research plans related to community and provider confidence in vaccines, level of confidence in vaccine providers, and level of confidence in medical and public health organization policies (e.g., vaccine approval process, recommendations for who should and should not receive a vaccine, and when vaccines should be administered). These high impact research areas will inform evidence-based programming and policymaking across not only the division, but the entire Department of Health.
The incumbent will apply statistical methods to systematically explore immunization facilitators and challenges, particularly among communities of focus. Projects will require unconventional or novel research approaches to respond to the current and exceptionally challenging immunization landscape. Projects will also result in a series of publishable contributions that answer important behavioral science questions, account for previously unexplained phenomena, and open significant innovative pathways for further study.
Minimum Qualifications G31 - master's degree in mathematics, statistics, engineering, biostatistics, public health, epidemiology, or a related field and six years of professional post-degree research experience* in the appropriate field.
*Substitution: a doctorate in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate leadership experience in the following fields: 5 or more years with statistical software such as SAS or SPSS, 3 or more years with cross-sector immunization programming, 5 or more years translating data into public health action, completion of complex and peer reviewed research studies, and building trust in scientific-based health benefits like immunization.
