Job Specifics

Duties Description This Maintenance Assistant, SG-9 performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and installation activities.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Painting of various facility interiors and exteriors using brush/roller methods and applying appropriate primers and finish paints for new or old substrates.
• Prepares surfaces by scraping, sanding or using a wire brush. Employee is to perform tasks using appropriate PPE equipment and safe work practices.
• Line striping of all facility roadways and parking stalls in Captree and Robert Moses State Parks using airless line striping spray equipment. In the absence of spray equipment, an appropriately sized roller and straight edge may be used.
• Prepares project work lists for all seasons and orders materials appropriately with warehouse requisition or store purchase.
• Maintains paint shop and keeps all associated work areas clean and paint storage rooms organized.
• Properly services and maintains all tools and spray equipment
• Works alongside and assists carpenters, general mechanics, and other trades as needed to successfully complete maintenance projects throughout the facility.
• Performs snow removal and road salt spreading of all facility roadways and parking lots using snowplow mounted trucks and road salt spreaders.
• Hand shovels snow from sidewalks and paths for employees and patrons to safely access buildings and rest room facilities.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.

Reassignment Qualifications:
Current NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Employees only, with at least one year of permanent or contingent-permanent qualifying service as a Maintenance Assistant.

Additional Comments Operating Needs:
• Must be available to work a variable schedule that includes weekends, holidays and/or evening shifts.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to operate a vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess a valid Class B*** Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement that allows the candidate to legally operate commercial vehicles in New York State or obtain one within the probationary period and maintain it as a term and condition of employment.

***Under the provision of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (1991), this position has been designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent is required to participate in pre-employment, random and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.
