Job Specifics
Duties Description The primary duty of this position is assisting with "Snapshot NY", a camera trap survey to sample the wildlife community on a landscape-scale. Duties will involve coordinating with landowners, setting up and taking down trail cameras, checking on cameras and refreshing batteries/memory cards, and processing and organizing photo data in the office. Cameras will be deployed on private and public lands and will involve significant time in the field each week, driving to sites that may be an hour or more from the office, navigating off-trail, hiking several miles per day, sometimes on steep forested terrain. Field work will include being part of a small team and also going afield alone and working independently.
This position will also periodically assist with several other aspects of the regional wildlife program, including but not limited to: conducting other wildlife surveys, assisting with waterfowl trapping/banding, performing habitat management, releasing captive-reared pheasants, checking hunter-harvested deer, responding to wildlife conflict situations, and collecting/preparing wildlife carcasses for the Wildlife Health Program.
Work schedule will typically be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm; however, some evening/early morning work and weekend work may be required.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience with trail camera survey methodology, proficiency with navigating off-trail using GPS and maps, and ability to traverse steep forested terrain.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2026. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
