Duties Description Summary:
Service and Repair Mechanics is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance (PM) on various motorized and non-motorized equipment including but not limited to, light-duty cars and trucks, medium-duty trucks, buses, tractors, riding and push mowers, portable and stationary generators and Grounds maintenance equipment.
The Service and Repair Mechanic position is a full-time Monday through Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm in the Maintenance Department. The position is required to work a rotational schedule during the winter to include one weekend per month or on-call/standby shifts.

Major Responsibilities:
General Duties
• Diagnose problems and perform all motor equipment maintenance and repair work (mechanical and electrical) in a timely manner.
• Perform preventive maintenance work on vehicles and equipment and maintain all records of work performed.
• Evaluate and inspect fleet equipment and vehicle conditions and prepare list describing vehicle condition and perform State inspection of fleet vehicles.
• Close out all completed work orders within 10 working days and order and keep track of vehicle parts that are needed for repairs and PM.
• Inspect and maintain a clean and safe work environment. Collect, store, and dispose of all hazardous materials generated in garage (eg., waste lube oil, etc.) according to the applied rules and regulations.
• Provide professional services to all customers in accordance with the mission statement of Facilities Operations and Services.

*Candidate must possess a basic hand tool set with sockets and wrenches up to 1 inch. Candidate will be eligible for an annual tool allowance payment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of:
• The operation of automotive equipment and other motor-driven equipment.
• The operation of construction equipment such as forklifts and backhoes.

Demonstrated Ability to:
• Make accurate diagnoses of mechanical or electrical problems for gas and/or diesel powered self-propelled and non-propelled automotive and construction equipment.
• Use the tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.
• Understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
• Read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints.

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems OR an associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.

Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience.
• Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technology or automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for one year of experience.
• Graduation from a one-year post high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
• When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficient in diagnosing and repairing complex electrical and hydraulic systems on heavy-duty diesel and gasoline machinery.
• Well versed in the practices and techniques of electric and oxy-acetylene welding for general fabrication and equipment repair.
• Accomplished leader with a proven track record of supervising diverse teams and spearheading employee development programs to improve performance.
• Expertise in analyzing complex schematics, circuit diagrams, and technical blueprints to ensure precise diagnostic and repair outcomes.
• Possess a New York State Motor Vehicle Inspectors Certification, Group 1&2, or ability to obtain one within the first six months.

Additional Comments SUNY Cortland employment offers eligibility for the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Program. The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments have been made under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.
