Job Specifics

Duties Description Student Assistants will have the opportunity to work directly with subject matter experts within the Office of Environment and Environmental Science Bureau, researching and providing direct assistance on developing or implementing statewide guidance and programs related to a variety of environmental issues intersecting the Department’s mission to provide a safe, reliable, equitable, and resilient transportation system that connects communities, enhances quality of life, protects the environment, and supports the economic well-being of New York State.

Under the supervision of an Environmental Specialist, the Student Assistant will participate in one or more of the following duties and responsibilities:

• Learning about stormwater treatment and asset inventory and management through working with staff to create/edit an inventory of stormwater treatment in ArcGIS Pro including creating geolocated shapes, adding data, editing information, and using geospatial analysis tools.

• Helping to implement NYSDOT’s program by participating in additional technical disciplines (Hazardous Waste management, Asbestos management, and Air Quality,) through duties like:

o Obtaining Hazardous Waste generator ID’s for NYSDOT owned bridges and coordinating with USEPA on user account information
o Helping implement the NYSDOT Asbestos program for projects by assisting Staff with Regional asbestos work requests and proposals, and
o Assisting the Air Quality subject matter experts on tasks as needed.

• Learning about roadside ecology and environmental mitigation by assisting NYSDOT in their pollinator and endangered species protection efforts by: Mapping (via GIS) NYSDOT managed land for enrollment in the Monarch Butterfly Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances

• Assisting with wildlife passage and connectivity for safety improvements by:

o Participating in research and modeling in GIS, and
o Assisting in the creation or testing of guidance and training.

• Some field work may be included at construction and restoration sites for inspection and inventory associated with any of the above duties.
An ideal candidate will have:

• Course work/ academic focus that includes environmental sciences, natural resource management, and/or economics.

• Background or interest in topics such as environmental regulations, stormwater management, air quality, endangered species, hazardous waste, vegetation management, pollinator protection, connectivity, etc, and

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Adobe Acrobat and understanding of GIS software such as Arc GIS Pro.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college study and be currently enrolled in an accredited program.

Additional Comments Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
