Job Specifics

Duties Description Work includes being part of a 3-person trail crew working on a variety of trail projects on State lands in the Hamilton and Fulton Counties. Projects may be 1-9 miles from the nearest road and may require a strenuous hike with a heavy pack through all weather conditions. A variety of trail projects will be undertaken including but not limited to trail building, campsite hardening, bridge building/repair, drainage work, blowdown clearing, rock work, relocating privies, turnpike installation, and additional tasks as assigned.

The Trail Crew Lead will be responsible for working with and keeping the crew on task as they complete various trail-related projects. They will be responsible for keeping track of Trail Crew’s work hours, communicating with administrative supervisor, taking direction from the Land Manager regarding scope of work for each project and keeping records of progress. There is an increased expectation of this position to anticipate needs of the crew and be prepared to address challenges as they arise in the field.

Minimum Qualifications One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.

Preferred qualifications include experience in trail work, preferably sustainable trail building and hardening techniques. Chainsaw training. First Aid certification. Experience in leadership or supervisory roles

Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.

Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
