Job Specifics

Duties Description The Wadsworth Center’s Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, Potable Water, and Ambient Air laboratories in the Laboratory of Organic Analytical Chemistry (LOAC) is seeking a Research Scientist 2 to ensure continuity of critical public health services, maintain laboratory certification and support increasing workload demands. This position serves a vital role in the supervision of key laboratory staff, proficiency in data review of time critical samples, and the continual operation of two laboratories. The laboratories analyze drinking water for over 60 individual volatile organic compounds and ambient air for over 50 volatile organic compounds. This position also supports the annual NYS Specific Organic Contaminants (SOC) State Assisted Sampling Program which assists counties whose local governments do not have the financial resources to effectively monitor their residents’ drinking water systems. This includes weekly monitoring of water supplies with short turnaround times, identifying issues through analysis that may jeopardize the future health of these residents and working with these counties to mitigate potential contaminants that may occur through improper contamination of local water supplies.

Minimum Qualifications Non Competitive: Bachelor’s degree in the natural sciences AND three years of post-degree professional research experience* in an appropriate field.

*Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with analytical instrumentation (Gas Chromatography or Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry); familiarization with Agilent MS Chemstation and MassHunter software packages and Microsoft Excel as it applies to quality control and data review; experience in a laboratory setting; ability to multitask and work independently; familiarization with EPA methodologies relevant to drinking water and/or air analysis; and a minimum of 6 months supervisory experience with oversight of employees in a laboratory setting.
